Dr. Ross Perry and "Scientific Dowsing"
Even well educated people fall for the buzzwords and science sounding terms used in pseudoscience, Dr. Ross Perry is one of these people. Dr. Perry he has a Bachelor of Science (BSc) and Bachelor of Veterinary Science (BVSc) from Sydney University and has done some great work over the years but has somehow fallen deep into the world of pseudoscience.
Dr. Perry discovered and did the early work on Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease (PBFD) and released a paper detailing that work called The pathology of psittacine beak and feather disease. He’s work on PBFD lead the way for more research and has most likely saved a lot of birds. |

So with a science based education and a history of publishing scientific papers it come as a surprise to me to find out that Dr. Perry is using Dowsing, Remote Radionics and Quantum Evaluations and Adjustments and Muscle-testing. He users these pseudosciences to help him in diagnosing illnesses in birds.
Dr. Perry doesn't use standard dowsing, he users “Scientific Dowsing” which are two words that are normally found further apart like “a scientific study was unable to prove the claims that dowsing works”. Time after time when dowsing is tested using scientific methods the results are the same and that is there is no evidence that dowsing works. I believe that he uses the name Scientific Dowsing to make it sound like there is proof that it works.

How is "Scientific Dowsing" meant to work?
Dr. Perry asks a pendulum a question and the 'pendulum” gives him a yes or no answer depending on which way it swings. You can watch it in this video where Dr. Perry is trying to find the cause of the illness in the Raven. What is most likely happening is that after years of working with birds he’s subconscious knows the most likely causes that lead to the symptoms that the bird is currently showing. Dr. Perry’s subconscious then causes the pendulum to move with out Dr. Perry knowing, this is the ideomotor response which is well documented by science.

I knew what dowsing was before reading about it on Dr. Perry’s website but Remote Radionics and Quantum Evaluations and Adjustments had me googling. Remote Radionics would be amazing if it worked but just being told about it makes most people call bullshit. Radionics is bad enough, using the “energy vibration” of all matter to get a reading of what is wrong and then testing things like vitamins to see if your “number” improves. But all you need to do for Remote Radionics is take a photo of the subject and send it off to a skilled radionics operator.

With just a photo the operator can suggest treatments that may help. How can people not see the problems with that?
I can’t even find what Quantum Evaluation means but I think it is what radionics operators tell people is at work when they do remote radionics. As someone that listens to a lot of science podcasts I can say with my basic understanding of quantum theory that this one is bullshit and that the use of the word quantum is only there to make is sound all sciency.
Dr. Perry and I have exchange emails and it’s clear to me that Dr. Perry has found spirituality which I don’t have an issue with. What I do have an issue with is when people with influence start to lead people away from the facts and use biased and misinformation to do it.

I tried to find information that backs up Dr. Perry’s claims about Radionics, Quantum Evaluations and Dowsing but so far I have found non. I emailed Princeton University about the CoRe instrument that Dr. Perry claims was developed at Princeton and I received a response from Princeton University which was “This instrument most likely stemmed from a research program that has been inactive for some time. As such, we’re unable to gather or provide any further information about it.” The only reference to this device that I can find is on Dr. Perry’s own website.
The emails from Dr. Perry to myself got a little weird with talk of entities, extraterrestrials and earthbound spirits affecting a pendulum. In one of my emails I included the line “If you believe in dowsing and muscle-testing then it’s just a short step to homeopathy which then leads to the belief that vaccines are bad.” He responded say he has posted links about big pharma and vaccines on this Facebook page.

Do I have “powers” that allowed me to connect with spirits that then told me that Dr. Perry will go down the anti-vaccination path? No I don’t, I uses my knowledge from researching alternative therapies to form an hypothesis that most people who are into alternative therapies will find their way to the misinformation about vaccines. Once there they will not check the claims made by these sites, just like they didn’t with the other alternative therapies and then they will start spreading the misinformation to more people.
Dr. Perry’s personal Facebook page is covered in pseudoscience and some really dangerous anti-vaccination posts which would concern me when getting veterinary advice as I would want the advice backed up by Science. When Dr. Perry wasn't using pseudoscience it appears he was a great Veterinarian and most likely still is if you are able to spot the pseudoscience and ignore it.
