What is cuttlebone used for?
There is a common belief that cuttlebone, also know as cuttlefish is given to birds as a way to keep their beaks short but this it not true. Cuttlebone is very soft and would have minimal, if any effect on a bird's beak. Cuttlebone is still a very useful tool and should be provided to your birds, but its real use is as a Calcium supplement.
The cuttlebone is the brittle internal structure of the cuttlefish with make up the family Sepiiddae. All cuttlefish have a cuttlebone and it is used for buoyancy control. It comprised mostly of Aragonite which is a carbonate mineral, one of the two most common, naturally occurring, crystal forms of calcium carbonate.
If you are looking for a why to keep your bird's beak maintained then natural branches that they can rip apart will do and your birds will get hours of enjoy from it too.
